Our first stop for the 2017 KATS season brought anglers to Lake Somerville near College Station, TX. A new KATS record 166 participants came down to the water for the tournaments first time at this lake. The crowd at the captain’s meeting revealed many familiar faces, as well a surprising number of people fishing their first KATS event.
The road-running kicked off just as the sun came up and kayaks took off in all directions, some still on vehicles and others in the water. The weather cooperated until mid-morning when the wind abruptly picked up making the already murky water more difficult to work. The heavy winds even proved to be too much for some anglers who brought in their boats early, exhausted from paddling against the weather.
Once everyone was back off the water, the group gathered around the park provided stage and pavilion to enjoy some company, hot dogs, and “Dale’s Pale Ale” provided generously by Oskar Blues. Shortly after, the pitching contest commenced. Todd Ashorn fought off the competition and took home the win in the flipping contest, winning an NRS cool-water package consisting of NRS Boundary shoes, a new Chinook PFD, and an Ambush tackle bag.
Just as Todd received his prize, the scoring for the day wrapped up and the awards got started. In the social division Jeremy Morse took home a huge win with a total of 87 inches, besting second place Christian Rowe who had 69.5. Third place went to Clinton Goertz with 66.75 inches.
In the pro division, Mike Mashl edged out Kenneth Davis by half an inch for first place scoring 94.75 inches over Kenneth’s 94.25. Mr. Davis also took home the Big Bass prize with a solid 23.25. Robert Morton III took home third place with 92.75 inches, followed by Andrew Tyler in fourth with 90.5″ and Jacob Moeller in fifth with 89.5. Matt
